Dear Colleagues. I am looking forward to giving my tutorial, and I want to thank those of you that made nice comments based on just the abstract (I hope I can live up to your comments!). In order to save you 5 euros, and to save some trees, I have arranged NOT to have printed notes. However note the following: 1) I will be distributing free CD-roms with the tutorial, plus bonus materials, cool datasets etc. 2) I will have USB sticks with the tut... [read more]

Ardian Kristanto Poernomo: Very nice slides! It is very useful, especially as I am currently preparing a paper to you-know-what. I hope your tutorial will be recorded :)
Lei Tang: I wish I have read your slides earlier. Very helpful. One concern is about the simplicity. Some reviewers tend to belittle simple ideas, though simpleness is an advantage in reality. My personal experience is that the same idea, when added with some ... [read more]

Syeda Momina Tabish posted Delayed VISA, missed a great opportunity

While I was dreaming with all eyes open, hoping to meet all the big names of Data Mining. Alas!!! the dreams got ruined by the over sensitive security clearance procedures. Till today no news of my visa la France. I really wish I could have join you all. Right now I'm looking for a person who could present on my behalf. Any one interested in presenting a paper on malware detection please drop me a line. Regards, Momina momina.tabish at nexginrc.o... [read more]

Augustin Chaintreau: Hi, I am sorry to hear that you were blocked by VISA issue. As french citizen I feel sorry that my country is giving you trouble to present your research here. I am not working on security, more about networking issue, and this is my first time to KD... [read more]

Martin Krallinger posted Biomedical text mining

I am interested in specifically analysing associations between biological entities extracted from the literature using information extraction and text mining systems as well as how to use such systems to prioritize disease associated genes.

David Woon posted First time in Paris?

Do consider exploring the entire city of Paris on FREE bikes! I did it last year - it was really fun and exciting, especially when searching for that evasive free slot at a bike stand with absolutely no knowledge of where the next bike stand was! My record: I ended up paying only 1 euro for the entire day because I can't find a free slot within 30mins in the shopping area! More details here: http://peter-travel.blogspot.com/2009/02/explore-paris-... [read more]

I'm double-hatting as Manager (Regional Partnerships) in the EADS research centre in Singapore - so hope to network with fellow miners in Singapore and Asia-Pacific region. Drop me a note and we can meet up for a chat!

David Woon posted Hottest Topic Now!

What do you think is the hottest KDD topic now? From an industrial viewpoint, I think it's anything that will help manage the current H1N1 pandemic as well as the terrorism threat. So I'll place my bet on Social Network Analysis which is useful for both contact-tracing and identification of terrorism suspects.

Ardian Kristanto Poernomo posted Unfortunate event: can't get the Visa on time..

Hi all, Too bad I cannot join KDD'09.. The last time I went the Europe (in 2007), the process was quite smooth. Therefore, I was quite confident and take the visa matter easy. However, there is a new regulation that Indonesian need (significantly, I can statistically prove it!) longer time to process the visa. Yes, I loss some money for my unused flight and registration fee.. which is quite large for a student (my university doesn't support). Mor... [read more]

Eamonn Keogh: Hi Ardian. This is sad news. Since you need to pay the conference fee anyway to have a paper published in SIGKDD, I don’t consider this a loss. However it is sad that you had to pay for a flight that you could not use. I would be happy to donate 10% ... [read more]
Ardian Kristanto Poernomo: Thanks Dr. Keogh :) My supervisor will come to the conference, so it shouldn't be a problem regarding the presentation. And, err, thanks for your kindness.. but sorry, I am not begging hehehe.. :) I am actually more upset that I loss the opportunity ... [read more]

If you are a paper author a) Please register with the same names that are used in your paper submissions. b) Please upload a picture of yourself and fill out your profile as much as possible. c) Try to contact others and ask them to come and register on this site so that we can all create a buzz. d) Help to make the site "come alive" by participating in discussions. See you in Paris!

George Forman: You can pre-register questions and comments for a paper/talk. That way, the authors can be ready to cover the question (perhaps with a slide having a graph prepared/etc.), or may proactively cover it in their talk itself.
Lei Tang: It would be great if the system can have links to the papers, slides or videos. For those who cannot attend the on-site conference, this forum is especially helpful.
Sankar Virdhagriswaran: Indeed. That is a good idea and perhaps you can start questioning other presenters, as well as yourself (see the audience ;-))

This is interesting having an online notepad to keep track of talks you're interested in, etc. Kudos to the organizers. I suppose it might create a dataset that we'll see analyzed at future KDD's. For a professional conference like KDD, the terms 'friend' and 'fan' might have too strong connotations, deterring some people from making links of interest. I'd suggest for KDD-like conferences, crowdvine should soften the meanings of the database link... [read more]
